Note
In the last few decades, the recognition
of the need to protect dwindling
global biodiversity resources
has resulted in the establishment of
networks of protected areas. These
areas provide relief to wildlife from
poaching and unregulated harvesting
and safeguard ecosystems and ecological
processes that benefit humans.
However, reviews of global networks
of protected area systems show that
deficiencies in size, planning and
management have resulted in the failure
to maximize the contributions of
protected areas to biodiversity conservation
(Birdlife International & IUCNWCPA
SEA 2007).
