Description

Our knowledge of Philippine herpetofauna is rapidly increasing. The ongoing efforts in surveying poorly understudied and unexplored areas in the country are important, as they provide extensive information in accounting for the diversity and distribution of herpetological communities in the country. These occurrence datasets include 35 species of amphibians and reptiles (10 frogs, 12 lizards, 12 snakes, and 1 turtle) based on empirical field-based data from our fieldwork in Mt. Agad-Agad in Lanao del Norte province, in southern Philippines. Our work on the herpetofauna of Mt. Agad-Agad was also recently published in Reptiles & Amphibians Maglangit et al. 2022: Richness and distribution of reptiles and amphibians in the tropical lowland habitats of Mt. Agad-Agad, Iligan City, southern Philippines. (https://doi.org/10.17161/randa.v29i1.18130). To enhance the usability and accessibility of the dataset and augment the gaps, we provide here a substantial dataset that can be utilized in generating species distribution models and initiatives that will support the conservation and protection of Mt. Agad-Agad.

Title Biodiversity Inventory, Assessment, and Conservation for Ecotourism Development in Mount Agad-Agad, Lanao del Norte
Identifier DC2505
Funding National Research Council of the Philippines of the Department of Science and Technology (NRCP-DOST)
Study Area Description Mt. Agad-Agad is situated in the southwestern part of northern Mindanao Island. It covers approximately 50-hectares encompassing the administrative districts of Pugaan, Tipanoy, and Ubaldo Laya of Iligan City. This mountain is characterized by ultramafic soil and aggregates of limestone karst outcrops, and consists of mixed agricultural areas, human-made plantations, and fragments of secondary forest (Maglangit et al. 2022).

Sampling Methods

We conducted two field surveys during 21–29 Februaryand 25 November – 04 December 2020. We cover the wet season of two different sampling localities, i.e., Pugaan (~ 23 ha.) and Tipanoy (~ 25 ha.); approximately 1.5 km apart. A combination of multiple sampling methods (e.g., strip transect, microhabitat search, acoustic sampling, and trapping methods), specimen collection and preservation, and photography was employed in the entire duration of the fieldwork (Maglangit et al. 2022).

Study Extent The information contained is based on the fieldwork conducted in Mt. Agad-Agad in year 2020.
Quality Control Identification was done using published literature for herpetofauna (Taylor 1920; Inger1954; Diesmos et al. 2015; Taylor 1922a, b; Leviton et al.2018; Weinell et al. 2020). We followed the nomenclature and taxonomic arrangements by Frost (2021) for amphibians (https://amphibiansoftheworld.amnh.org/) and Uetz et al. (2021) for reptiles (http://reptile-database.org/).

Method step description:

  1. 1. Request a Gratuitous Permit from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources in order to collect voucher specimens; 2. Coordination with the local communities to conduct fieldwork in Mt. Agad-Agad; 3. During the fieldwork proper, we employ 10by100 meter strip transect as our sampling unit; 4. We record visually detected species and collect voucher specimens; 5. Collected voucher specimens were photographed, measured and preserved using fixed specimens using a 10% buffered formalin solution (Maglangit et al. 2022), and stored them in 70% ethanol solution following the standard preservation protocol developed by Heyer et al. (1994) and Simmons (2002).
